Botox, the trade name for botulinum toxin, is a substance used in cosmetic medicine to correct the dynamic wrinkles of the face, caused by the contraction of facial muscles or mimic. Botulinum toxin acts causing muscle relaxation and thus the disappearance of wrinkles because it blocks the transmission of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that is released from the nerves to stimulate the muscles to contract.

It can be used to treat wrinkles in different areas of the face: forehead, glabella (the central area between the eyebrows) and periorbital region ("crow's feet"), but can also be used in the lower third of the face (wrinkles around the mouth and chin) and neck wrinkles.

When the procedure is performed by expert hands and without exaggeration, treating only the muscle groups that produce more wrinkles, facial expression is not absolutely changed.

The toxin, is diluted in saline and injected under the skin, at selected points in accordance with the wrinkles to be treated. Botox is injected with a very fine needle and most patients report that the "pinprick" is perfectly bearable or even completely painless. For more sensitive patients can use an anesthetic cream that applied 20 minutes before the procedure can relieve discomfort.

The effect of the treatment begins to be visible between 48 hours and 7 days and gradually increases in 10-15 days after application, when it stabilizes.
On average the effect of the treatment lasts about 3-6 months after which may require a new application for the maintenance of the results. This time may vary according to each person. The procedure can be repeated more times and with the continuity of the treatment, the duration of effect may increase. In any case, after the botox for the first time it is not mandatory to repeat at fixed intervals. Some patients fear that, once past the effect, wrinkles may worsen.

This is absolutely not true, in fact: the time that lasts the effect of botox skin is virtually frozen in time because the relaxation of the muscles of the face prevents the grooves are deepened by the continued contraction then, after six months, the skin It will be much more relaxed and less marked than it was before.

There are no known allergic reactions to botulinum toxin, however, there may be temporary side effects such as headaches after the procedure or the ptosis (lowering) of the upper eyelid. Any effect resolves spontaneously over time anyway. Another possible side effect is the formation of small ecchymoses (bruising) at the injection site that tend to disappear within 48 hours.
